My favorite Sosa memories

I was fifteen during the summer of 98, and was barely a baseball fan at the time, let alone a Cubs fan. My family is full of Cubs fans but as I grew up in the DC area and didn’t have cable for most of my childhood, my baseball fandom was pretty much confined to watching the playoffs, so I didn’t see much of the Cubs. Sosa changed all of that for me - the summer of 98 was when I became a fan of baseball on my own terms. Sosa just had fun playing baseball, and he shared his joy for playing baseball with everyone who watched him. Despite the fact that McGwire ‘won’ the HR chase, Sammy really seemed to be the player who kept it going and kept it friendly. He was right there to greet McGwire when he broke the record, and I still couldn’t believe that the record was broken with both men on the field - it’s probably still the best baseball moment I’ve ever witnessed.

My other favorite moment was years later, during the 2003 playoffs. My future wife and I had just moved in together and were still getting used to each others’ habits/hobbies/etc. She seemed kind of unsure about this whole Cubs thing, though she did enjoy watching games with me. Just before the playoffs, mlb introduced their “I live for this” ad campaign, and one of the ads starred Sosa (sadly I can’t seem to find it online anywhere). He gushed (in only the way that Sosa can) about how lucky he was to be playing baseball, and to play at Wrigley field. My wife ‘got it’ why everyone was such a huge fan. She became a huge fan of Sosa (and later, Kenny Lofton and Eric Karros, among other Cubs) and dove right into the 2003 playoffs with me. As awful as the outcome ended up being, it was one of the best experiences of my lifetime, and I’m glad I got to share it with her.

That audio of Pat of Ran gives me goose bumps.  I’ve listened to it about 5 times this morning already.  Great stuff.

That was pretty cool.

I can send you all the files if you want MB. It’s from a 98 Cubs cd that my in-laws bought me last year

If anyone who’s not a contributor has a Sosa memory to share, please PM it to me, and we’ll try and post it.  We’ll have our memories throughout the day. Right now we have enough to take us to noon, but from 1 to 6 (game time), we need some more.

I posted to my blog the other day that I feel bummed that I missed out on the 98 Cubs. I knew about the HR race, but I didn’t really follow the team at all that year. I found out about Wood’s 20K game years later

I’d appreciate that.  Is it easy for you to do?  I don’t want you to go to any troubles.  I may upload bits of it to the site from time to time.  That was a great year.

Yeah, it’s no problem. There are audio clips of Wood’s 20K game, Harry’s last 7th inning stretch, Beck’s 50th save, some HRs by Grace, and the Cubs clinching the playoff berth, too, along with some random songs.

No, sadly. That would have been pretty awesome though.

I can’t remember it exactly, but it’s hilarious.  Typical Santo.

I don’t know if anybody heard last night or not, but on whatever CSN Sports show they have after the post game, the guys snickered about Sosa saying he didn’t want to talk about steroids.  it is mindboggling just how many people bought what the Tribune and Cubs were selling about Sosa.  It truly is one of the saddest things I’ve seen.  It’s disturbing seeing so many people believing every word they’re told and letting others form opinions for them.

By all means, avoid the BTI thread on Sosa’s retirement. You’ll want to drive nails into your eyes

I think 4th outfielder is his ceiling at this point, but Ryno knows more than I do.

I don’t know about any of this comment. If you put his best hitting, patience and power together, you have a very good-hitting CF.

For me, it’s all about whether he can play CF.

So we’re basically wasting our time following the DSL.

You might not have the right codec, ccd. This is just the format that my computer made when I dumped the cd, so I don’t know how prevalent it is

Responding to parts in the retirement post… Just imagine Sosa, Palmiero and Maddux during the late-90’s. I’m sure that can be said about a lot of teams, but still…

It’s a .ogg file.  You’ll need winamp installed.  It’s free.  Search for it.  It’s a must have.  I’m sure there are other applications that play it, but you need to have winamp anyway.

But isn’t that true for so many players though?  I’d imagine it’s true for nearly every player drafted in the top 5 rounds, plus almost all international signings.

I just find the whole thing sad. What the fuck is wrong with these people?

He really did.  I don’t know if there has been a player since him who was so attuned to the fanbase.  He knew exactly what to do to get the fans in the game.

Yeah, but that’s what his ceiling is. It’s the best he’s capable of performing. He has shown good power and patience and decent defense for CF. If he can put it all together (i.e. reach his ceiling), he’s a good, solid, cheap player.

Wilson Betemit is being DFA’d by the White Sox.  Anybody interested?
